Our 5 Star Restoration Process
Western Pacific Log Home Restoration adheres to a multi-step rigorous process, ensuring that every log home we restore achieves top-quality results.
Step 1: Blasting
The first step is to remove the existing stain from the logs. To accomplish this, we use walnut blasting, an environmentally friendly media that removes the stain without damaging the log surface. We adjust the blast pressure according to the finish or surface to ensure the best results.
Step 4: Staining
For staining, we use only the highest quality products available. We recommend either two coats of Sashco Transformation oil-based stain or two coats of Sashco Capture water-based stain, followed by one coat of Sashco Cascade clear coat. We apply sample coats for you to choose the color that best fits your preference. Once the stain is approved, we apply the stain by spraying and back brushing in every drop for even coverage.
Step 2: Surface Preparation
We then sand over all surfaces blasted to remove the weathered layer, leftover stain from blasting and most importantly to smoothen the surface for proper stain adherence. This step is critical to the overall quality of the log home restoration. We dedicate a significant amount of time to this step to ensure the best possible outcome.
Step 5: Chinking
Chinking is an acrylic-based material that adheres and moves with the logs over time as they shift. It improves energy efficiency by preventing air infiltration, enhances the visual appeal of a log home, and protects against water infiltration, decay, and pests. We apply the material pneumatically and brush it to create a seal against the logs. Chinking can be done before or after staining, depending on the desired look.
Step 3: Borate Treatment
If you are doing a complete restoration, we highly recommend a borate treatment coat to protect your log home from wood-destroying insects and decay. Borate creates a chemically protective barrier against all insects, fungi (dry rot) and weather-induced rot. This treatment can only be applied when the logs are completely bare and will significantly extend the time before needing another restoration.
Step 6: Rotten Log Repair
We use a moisture meter to identify areas with rot. Once we have located the affected logs, we remove the damaged portions and replace them with brand new logs. After the replacement, we apply a suitable stain and sealant to ensure the repaired area blends in with the rest of the log home seamlessly.
